Tax Trainee

Serena Rudol, Tax Department, Edinburgh office

Qualifications

BA Accounting, currently enrolling for ATT

Current role

I complete corporation and self assessment tax returns, contacting clients and lodging the approved returns with HMRC.

Why I’m with Henderson Loggie

I applied for a job with Henderson Loggie to further my studies after graduating from Napier University. I thought the tax trainee job would be a good opportunity to gain knowledge and qualifications with a reputable firm.

Never a dull day

The complexity of the tax rules means that clients are not always aware of what they can and cannot claim. This keeps the tax team busy checking unusual items so the client receives all benefits possible.

A good day is when …

We receive a new or unusual query from a client or new legislation comes out which we have to learn and tackle.

A bad day is when …

Your client list is up to date and there is no additional work to be completed, because there are always the odd jobs to be done that everyone puts off! These include filing and sorting out the old paperwork and sending it to storage.

Advice for graduates joining the firm

After only being with Henderson Loggie for just under a year I have enrolled to sit my tax exams. If I am not 100% sure of a topic which has arisen my colleagues within the office are always willing to explain and make sure I understand should a similar scenario occur. I think this is a great advantage, having a culture where the more senior staff are happy to spend time with you to help your development.
